The IBM building in Chicago recently underwent a significant transformation. The modernist office building created by Mies van der Rohe has been converted into a 316-room luxury hotel. Last week marked the opening of The Langham Chicago in the 52-story IBM Building that was originally a state-of-the-art skyscraper for IBM built back in 1972. After IBM abandoned the space in 2006, the building was set to go residential, first with condos, and then, two years later, with a hotel. However after the 2008 crash, the developer decided the Chicago market couldn’t support another 300 rooms of hospitality. Work stopped until 2010, when the property was bought out by Langham Hotels, who envisioned the building as a new luxury hotel project in Chicago. Check out images of The Langham Chicago below:
